Historical Hike in the Footsteps of Rūsiņš
Following the Trail of the War Leader Rūsiņš
Join us for an exciting hike where participants get the chance to experience one of the most heroic periods in Latvian history—the time of the Crusades (13th century)—through hands-on discovery.
Guided by the writings of the Chronicle of Henry of Livonia, we will follow in the footsteps of one of the bravest medieval Lettish commanders—Rūsiņš.
This is a 7-hour active hike (8–10 km) through one of the oldest forests along the Gauja River, culminating at Rūsiņš’ stronghold—Kvēpene Hillfort (Sotekle).
Along the way, participants will have the opportunity to wear an authentic medieval armor set (chainmail, helmet, spear) and walk part of the trail in this historical gear—experiencing what it felt like to travel and fight in those times. You’ll also try out medieval weapons, learn techniques, and upon reaching the hillfort, we’ll attempt to uncover the secrets of Rūsiņš’ castle—why was it nearly impossible to conquer, and what ultimately happened to it?
On the hike, we’ll explore and learn about:
-
Lettish archaeological monuments
-
Ancient sites (how to recognize them in nature)
-
Medieval roads in the modern landscape
-
Myths vs. truths in historical sources
-
Replicas of period-specific weapons and armor
-
Geography as it was during the writing of the Chronicle of Henry
-
The campaigns of Rūsiņš and the mysteries of his fortress
Midway through the hike:
We’ll enjoy a picnic break by a campfire on the Gauja riverside, with educational materials, demonstrations, and historical activities.
