This Year Marks 814 Years Since the First Mentions of Latvian Leaders in the Chronicle of Henry

This year marks 814 years since the first known Latvian leaders, chieftains, and warlords were listed in our earliest written historical source—the Chronicle of Henry. Their historical role helped Bishop Albert of Riga fulfill his dream of establishing a Livonian state on the northeastern Baltic coast.

The Chronicle lists these leaders in a specific order:
I. Russinus de castro Sotecle (Rūsiņš of Sotekle)
II. Waridote de Autine (Varidots of Autīne)
III. Talibaldus de Beverine (Tālivaldis of Beverīna)

Considering that Rūsiņš is named first in the Chronicle—before the other leaders—we believe his historical importance has received far too little attention. For this reason, we have chosen to elevate this subject above all others, dedicating our research and educational efforts to this direction. It was right here in Raiskums that the warlord Rūsiņš built his stronghold—Sotekle—a site which, based on its present-day natural contours, appears to have been grand and nearly impregnable.

That is the story we aim to tell.
