knightly movement in Latvia\u2014who, together with like-minded companions, is now focused on developing and refining cultural-historical tourism in Raiskums.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"406\" data-end=\"706\">This is not a tale about the greatest conspiracy in our nation&#8217;s history. Rather, it\u2019s a journey worthy of a Holy Grail quest\u2014tracing the footsteps of one of the most courageous and least-known heroes in Latvian history: R\u016bsi\u0146\u0161. And more than that, it is a journey toward discovering one\u2019s true self.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"708\" data-end=\"1214\">Much like Professor Robert Langdon, the Harvard symbologist in Dan Brown\u2019s novels, Andris Geid\u0101ns unravels the untold chapters of our national history step by step\u2014piecing together facts, events, and archaeological finds to form a completely new perspective on what we thought we knew. He creates a sense of intrigue that captivates even those who\u2019ve never had any interest in history. After all, who can remember endless names, places, and dates? History is boring\u2014right? There is something prophet-like in his voice and passionate manner of speech\u2014something that demands a crowd of followers or at least a few \u201capostles\u201d to immortalize his philosophy, ideas, worldview, and the long-forgotten values he embodies.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"533\" data-end=\"988\">Geid\u0101ns possesses a rare curiosity, and nearly every place he sets foot is \u201cdevoured\u201d by his research\u2014examined and studied to its deepest historical roots. His knowledge is rich and diverse, from world religions to the culinary nuances of various peoples. But above all, what fascinates him most is the ancient history of his own land. Today, Geid\u0101ns and his companions in Raiskums offer engaging hikes designed to make history vivid, alive, and exciting.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"990\" data-end=\"1486\">It all began in 1997 with the founding of Latvia\u2019s first historical reenactment group\u2014the \u201cLivonians\u201d public organization, which became the foundation for the cooperative <em data-start=\"1161\" data-end=\"1194\">Historically Active in Raiskums<\/em>. The goal of the Livonian movement was to preserve the educational, strategic, and cultural backbone for breathing life into history. The website <em data-start=\"1341\" data-end=\"1362\">vesturiskiaktivs.lv<\/em> serves as a long-cultivated field of experience and the foundation for socially responsible tourism in the Raiskums region.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1488\" data-end=\"1649\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1490\" data-end=\"1649\">\u201cSo that our footsteps do not fade into oblivion, but instead become a historical contribution that helps history live and revive within us,\u201d explains Geid\u0101ns.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"1651\" data-end=\"1654\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"1656\" data-end=\"1703\">Raiskums \u2013 The Cradle of the Latvian Nation<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1705\" data-end=\"1898\">Raiskums is Geid\u0101ns\u2019 homeland. His family name has appeared in the C\u0113sis region since the second half of the 15th century, and his mother\u2019s lineage has lived in Raiskums since the 16th century.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"1900\" data-end=\"2108\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"1902\" data-end=\"2108\">\u201cI have arrived at the place where my roots are deepest. That\u2019s why I feel the spirit of this place in every cell of my body\u2014it gives me enormous strength and energy. I melt in this interest,\u201d says Geid\u0101ns.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2110\" data-end=\"2561\">In his presence, the Raiskums region comes alive\u2014behind every hill lies a story, each stone hides a secret. Before you know it, you find yourself in the heart of historically significant events, brought to life by his storytelling. The historical facts, discoveries, and archaeological findings he and his colleagues have pieced together form a mosaic\u2014how precise it is may be up for debate, but the arguments are powerful, visible, and even tangible.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2563\" data-end=\"2790\">Once just a scenic backdrop for the legendary film <em data-start=\"2614\" data-end=\"2655\">Limousine the Colour of Midsummer&#8217;s Eve<\/em>, Raiskums transforms through Geid\u0101ns\u2019 guidance into a landscape where crucial moments in the formation of the Latvian nation unfolded.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2792\" data-end=\"2909\">This land was once home to the Letts\u2014or Latgalians\u2014who, together with the Livs, form the roots of the Latvian people.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"2911\" data-end=\"2914\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"2916\" data-end=\"2942\">Traces of the Ancients<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"2944\" data-end=\"3202\">Miracles aren\u2019t far off\u2014near the Geid\u0101ns family home lie two ancient burial sites dating back over 500 years BCE. In 1897, during an archaeological expedition, a mysterious amber button was found here, whose function remains unknown due to its unusual shape.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3204\" data-end=\"3404\">Although the word <em data-start=\"3222\" data-end=\"3232\">Raiskums<\/em> has no meaning in Latvian, it does in Estonian. The name, of Finno-Ugric origin, translates to \u201chill of the dead\u201d or \u201ccarrion hill\u201d\u2014<em data-start=\"3365\" data-end=\"3372\">raisk<\/em> meaning something vile or evil.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3406\" data-end=\"3530\">Historically, Raiskums referred not just to a village but to the territory stretching from Lake Raiskums to the Gauja River.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"3532\" data-end=\"3858\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3534\" data-end=\"3858\">\u201cSo this \u2018hill of the dead\u2019 must lie somewhere in between,\u201d suggests Geid\u0101ns. \u201cThere\u2019s an old road here leading to the Gauja. I believe this was once the historic Bever\u012bna Road connecting Imera and Bever\u012bna. If, as many archaeologists think, Bever\u012bna was located in Rauna, it makes sense that this road passed through here.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"3860\" data-end=\"3863\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"3865\" data-end=\"3889\">The Quest for R\u016bsi\u0146\u0161<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"3891\" data-end=\"4340\">Geid\u0101ns&#8217; greatest current mission is to find the burial site of R\u016bsi\u0146\u0161\u2014the bravest of the ancient Letts. His residence was the Sat\u0113kle Castle, the exact location of which remains disputed. R\u016bsi\u0146\u0161 was a prominent figure in the German expansion into Estonian lands but later turned against them and became a key player in the Latgalian resistance. According to the <em data-start=\"4254\" data-end=\"4285\">Chronicle of Henry of Livonia<\/em>, he was \u201cthe bravest of the Letts\u201d\u2014a rare designation.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4342\" data-end=\"4671\">During the planning of the <em data-start=\"4369\" data-end=\"4391\">Thousand-Year Forest<\/em> expedition, Geid\u0101ns and his companions discovered an ancient burial mound in the Di\u017eme\u017es forest\u2014an unusual formation that may hold someone of high status. Stone circles and carbon layers beneath the soil have confirmed the site\u2019s significance. Excavations are scheduled for July.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"4673\" data-end=\"4908\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4675\" data-end=\"4908\">\u201cMy theory is that this could be R\u016bsi\u0146\u0161\u2019 final resting place,\u201d says Geid\u0101ns. \u201cThe hill lay on the route to Imera, and even long after his death, Estonians\u2014who had suffered greatly under him\u2014may have called it the \u2018hill of the dead.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"4910\" data-end=\"4913\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"4915\" data-end=\"4944\">Reviving Forgotten Heroes<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"4946\" data-end=\"5253\">Despite R\u016bsi\u0146\u0161&#8217; historical importance, Latvian literature barely mentions him. Geid\u0101ns argues that political agendas shaped historical narratives, promoting figures like Namejs and Viestards\u2014leaders from Semigallia\u2014while ignoring the Letts, who didn\u2019t neatly fit into the anti-German resistance storyline.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5255\" data-end=\"5366\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5257\" data-end=\"5366\">\u201cThe Letts&#8217; greatest threats weren\u2019t the Germans\u2014they were the Estonians and the Russians,\u201d Geid\u0101ns explains.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5368\" data-end=\"5475\">He believes R\u016bsi\u0146\u0161\u2019 story would make a far more compelling series than yet another dramatization of Namejs.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"5477\" data-end=\"5480\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"5482\" data-end=\"5518\">The Lost Sword and the True Flag<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5520\" data-end=\"5755\">Geid\u0101ns also offers a theory about the ancient national weapon of the Letts\u2014the <em data-start=\"5600\" data-end=\"5613\">short sword<\/em>, known in folklore as the <em data-start=\"5640\" data-end=\"5652\">trejasmens<\/em> (three-blade). It featured three functional cutting edges and a fighting style unique to Latgalians.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5757\" data-end=\"5897\">This also explains the presence of large wrist guards on the left arms of Latgalian men\u2014they needed full use of both arms in close combat.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"5899\" data-end=\"6020\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"5901\" data-end=\"6020\">\u201cI feel a missionary calling to restore this weapon as a symbol of our people\u2019s long journey through history,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6022\" data-end=\"6209\">He also suggests that the ancient Lettish flag\u2014red with a white or silver stripe\u2014may originally have had a diagonal line, symbolizing movement and the north-eastward journey of the Letts.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"6211\" data-end=\"6318\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6213\" data-end=\"6318\">\u201cA diagonal line gives the flag momentum. Right now, our flag lies flat. We need movement!\u201d says Geid\u0101ns.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"6325\" data-end=\"6353\">Learning Without Gadgets<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"6355\" data-end=\"6525\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6357\" data-end=\"6525\">\u201cIf history is to be taught today in a way that makes people listen, it must be outdoors, where we physically engage with objects, places, and events,\u201d Geid\u0101ns insists.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6527\" data-end=\"6785\">During the <em data-start=\"6538\" data-end=\"6560\">Thousand-Year Forest<\/em> hike, participants learn how to survive without gadgets\u2014how to make fire, forage safely, understand physics-based survival, and live in harmony with nature. One of the greatest resources a person has, he explains, is energy.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6787\" data-end=\"6904\">He emphasizes that people today waste their energy\u2014running marathons not because they must, but to prove something.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"6906\" data-end=\"7036\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"6908\" data-end=\"7036\">\u201cAnimals don\u2019t run unless they have to. Neither should we,\u201d he says. \u201cWe must learn to conserve and direct our energy properly.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7038\" data-end=\"7164\">Participants are reminded of long-lost skills\u2014like how to process an animal for food and what can safely be eaten in the wild.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"7166\" data-end=\"7331\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7168\" data-end=\"7331\">\u201cPeople arrive in the forest with all their urban ego. The first task is to shed the unnecessary and understand your place in the natural order,\u201d Geid\u0101ns explains.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"7333\" data-end=\"7336\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"7338\" data-end=\"7376\">\u201cThe Chronicle of Henry\u201d as a Path<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7378\" data-end=\"7506\">The idea for <em data-start=\"7391\" data-end=\"7435\">In the Footsteps of the Chronicle of Henry<\/em> came to Geid\u0101ns while reading the chronicle at his countryside home.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-start=\"7508\" data-end=\"7682\">\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7510\" data-end=\"7682\">\u201cThe third part of the Chronicle is about Raiskums\u2014then known as part of Idumea, inhabited by Letts and Livs. This is the very cradle of the Latvian ethnogenesis,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"7684\" data-end=\"7972\">A two-day hike follows the events of the Chronicle exactly, with participants experiencing history physically\u2014carrying bows, mail, and period gear, testing distances, terrain, and logic. Along the way, they try spear throwing, archery, fire-making\u2014everything crucial to medieval survival.<\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<hr class=\"\" data-start=\"7974\" data-end=\"7977\" \/>\n<h3 class=\"\" data-start=\"7979\" data-end=\"8021\">The Royal Picnic \u2013 A Feast of the Land<\/h3>\n<p><\/p>\n<p class=\"\" data-start=\"8023\" data-end=\"8266\">The <em data-start=\"8027\" data-end=\"8041\">Royal Picnic<\/em> is the pinnacle of outdoor leisure. It includes the best forest location, horseback rides, lake boating, archery, kokle music, goulash-making lessons, and fire-roasted fish.
